Learn about the education beat

PIOs, School board members and parents.

Covering education can be a trying task for journalists. At the April meeting we've put together a team of experts that could make covering your next education story easier.

Come and invite your friends and colleagues to our next general body meeting, set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15 in the Dowd board room of the Levine Museum of the New South, 200 E. Seventh St.

Our second professional development session will include three guest panelists:
-- Jerri Haigler, Assistant to the President for Community Relations and Public Affairs for Central Piedmont Community College, former Public Information Officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
-- Harvey Gantt, Former Charlotte Mayor and member of the Citizens' Task Force
-- Ann Doss Helms, longtime education reporter for The Charlotte Observer

This is a great opportunity to get story ideas, and figure out ways to expand education coverage. The speakers are taking time out of their busy lives for our benefit. Let's make sure we greet them with a full house.

Melody Freeman
Vice-President of Broadcast,
Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists

Covering the Hispanic community

At our March general body meeting, we'll hold our first professional development session on a topic of great importance to our region: the growing Hispanic community. The meeting is set for 11:30 am. March 18 in the Dowd board room of the Levine Museum of the New South, 200 East Seventh St.

Our guest panelists will be Angeles Ortega-Moore, executive director of the Latin American Coalition and John Romero of WCNC-TV and an at-large officer for television for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists-Charlotte chapter. Both with talk about on-going issues within the Hispanic community, and offer tips on how to cover this segment of our community.

Two of our chapter’s biggest goals are to help promote diversity in news coverage and help our members hone their reporting skills. We think that this workshop will help us do both, and you’ll walk away with tools to help write stories about this segment of our community.

Learn more about both organizations at www.latinamericancoalition.org and www.nahjcharlotte.org.

We are pleased to announce our first event for the year, "Secrets to Accessing the Media: How to Get your Stories Told." The workshop is set for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 28 in Salons A & B of the Student Activity Center at UNC Charlotte, 9201 University City Blvd. Free parking is available in the Cone and West decks. Please note that we will have a short general body meeting at 12:30.

Special thanks to program chair Lena Warmack of The Charlotte (CAABJ's vice president of print), Morgan Josey of The Gaston-Gazette, Ken Lemon of WSOC-TV, Dedrick Russell of WBTV and other members of the board of directors for their roles in planning the event.

Read below for more details on the project and how you can get involved:

Media Contact List
We will distribute a list of media companies and contacts to attendees. Please forward information about your company to Dedrick Russell at darussell@wbtv.com by Friday, Jan. 13. Information needed: main contact name and title; organization, office number, fax number, e-mail, web site, and a list of other African-American journalists at your organization.

Refreshments
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to buy refreshments for the workshop. Be sure to look for your name on the attached sheet. We're also looking for one more volunteer to man the refreshment table to the event. Contact Morgan Josey at morgan_josey@link.freedom.com if you're interested.

Publicity
Please help us spread the word about our media-access workshop by
distributing the PSA found below within your companies. Be
sure to e-mail April Bethea at abethea@charlotteobserver.com, and tell
her who you've sent the information to and when it actually appears in
your publication or is aired. Thanks in advance.

The Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists proudly presents "Secrets to Accessing the Media: How to Get Your Stories Told" at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at UNC Charlotte's Student Activity Center, Salons A & B. Said Parliamentarian Cleve Wootson: "We've set an informal goal to increase membership to 50 members by July. At the Board of Directors meeting, we talked about ways to do that, but the best way is word of mouth. So we're sending out the membership application, and asking you to talk to coworkers, students, former journalists, professors, anyone you know that might be interested."

Chapter dues will support programs during the year and some administrative expenses. Dues were approved at the December 2005 general body meeting.

To join, please send the following information and a check for dues (payable to CAABJ) to Treasurer Cheryl "Chirl Girl" Patterson at V101.9 FM; 1520 South Blvd., Suite 300; Charlotte, NC 28203.
