The Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists (CAABJ) is an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), a nonprofit organization focused on establishing strong ties among African-Americans working in the media and expanding and balancing the media's coverage of the African-American community and experience.

Mitch is founder of the National Pink Tie Day and the non-profit A Tie That BindsA Tie That Binds provides educational resources, support, and early detection initiatives to men who have someone in their life touched by breast cancer. Each year October 20 is set aside as National Pink Tie Day; men are asked to wear a pink tie to honor the women in their life who are currently battling or have lost their battle with breast cancer.
